The First Limited Edition Kinetasphere Watch Case is an unapologetic artistic engineering assertion designed for the discerning. This watch case, sold without a watch, is a fusion of intricate design and engineering excellence. Crafted in a serialized run of 50 pieces, each is marked with its unique number, design version, and manufacturing date, issued in order of purchase.

This watch case represents a personal journey, a shift from creating for others to focusing on one's own passion for degrees of freedom. Spanning over four years, it’s a testament to the dedication to artistic and engineering mastery.

Featuring a Möbius Kaleidocycle exterior and a compliant mechanical pillow, every part is meticulously designed and functional. From CNC machined aluminum to a matte black finish, it’s a masterpiece that delights in every state: closed, open, empty, or full. There are no gimmicks, just pure delight and function.

Each serialized piece is market with its number, design version, and manufacturing date. Piece numbers will be issued in the order of purchase.

While we offer flat rate shipping for all international orders, packages may be subject to additional import duties during delivery depending on the country. Due to the variety of locations that we serve, we rely on customers to manage regional policies and fees for their specific order.

The Spherical Kaleidocycle

We built a mobius kaleidocycle into the walls of a hollow sphere and machined it from solid blocks of aluminum.

Compliant Mechanical Pillow

We've developed a black sintered nylon single degree of freedom compressing compliant mechanical pillow to hold your watch.

Finite Magnetic Field

NOTE: The rare earth magnets used to secure the closed kaleidocycle result in magnetic field strength of 0.65-3.5 Gauss, up from Earth's 0.5 Gauss magntic field. Worst case timekeeping gain may be 1-5 seconds per day.

Careful Construction

The Kinetasphere Watch Case is meticulously crafted from CNC machined aluminum, ensuring a robust yet refined structure. The use of solid aluminum not only provides durability but also allows for the complex geometries of the Möbius Kaleidocycle. Each piece is precisely machined to maintain the integrity and aesthetic of the design.

Stainless steel hardware is used throughout the assembly, offering both strength and corrosion resistance. This combination of materials ensures that the watch case remains secure and reliable over time. The careful selection of hardware complements the overall design, ensuring that each component functions seamlessly within the assembly.

Every detail, from the precise machining to the matte black anodized finish, reflects a commitment to quality and craftsmanship. This construction approach not only enhances the visual appeal but also ensures longevity and functionality, making each watch case a true masterpiece.

Years of Engineering Hurdles

The Kinetasphere Watch Case presented a series of unique engineering challenges. The integration of a Möbius Kaleidocycle, with its complex geometry, required precise CNC machining from solid aluminum to maintain both structural integrity and aesthetic appeal.

Designing joints that reduced the degrees of freedom while maintaining smooth movement was a significant challenge. The compliant mechanical pillow, securely held by a compliant iris, needed careful calibration to ensure minimal backlash and a seamless user experience.

Additionally, achieving a smooth, matte black anodized finish that could resist scratches while preserving the visual illusion of continuous surfaces required a meticulous process of smooth machining, tumbling, etching, and anodizing. Each step was critical to the final product, ensuring every surface and function was both deliberate and delightful.

Developing the compliant mechanical pillow and iris was a critical part of the design process. The pillow needed to provide a secure yet gentle hold for the watch, ensuring it would not dye or scratch it. This required using native black sintered nylon, which offers both durability and flexibility.

The iris, machined from solid aluminum, posed its own set of challenges. It had to be both compliant and robust, securing the pillow in place while allowing for easy removal. Achieving this balance of strength and flexibility required meticulous design and precision engineering.

Both components needed to work harmoniously to ensure the watch remained secure and accessible, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship and thoughtful engineering behind the design.

Design Story and Motivation

This watch case embodies a deeply personal journey, marking a shift from creating for others to focusing on one’s own passion for degrees of freedom. It reflects a moment of transition, where the creator decided to channel their engineering skills into something that resonated personally, rather than aligning with external demands.

The development process, spanning over four years, was a testament to the creator's dedication and artistic pursuit. Each iteration brought the design closer to the envisioned ideal, exploring the bounds of both art and engineering.

In this watch case, the creator found an outlet for their passion, creating something that is not just a functional object, but a piece of art that stands as a testament to meticulous craftsmanship and personal expression.
